On the
Lighter Side
By Barb Buntin
I love funny little slices of life. Ones that are rich and can be turned into simple stories. Animals are probably my favorite characters because they are so innocent and in the moment. They also aren’t inclined towards litigation.
I had two little Minnie Aussies, Sophie and Mandy, and what characters they were. Their minds were always working. Sophie’s was especially active. At the time they were part of a pack of six and managed to stand out even though they were the smallest.
Sophie was very disciplined in her scheming. When I would give everyone a bone, she would bury hers and then come back and wait. Yes, sooner or later the others would get thirsty and she would swoop in grab their bone and then hide it. They never did figure it out. Sophie would have.
Being a cattle dog and a heeler at that, people coming in the yard were subject to her ample skill of heeling. I could never break her of that. An old friend, Choc, was her favorite target. No matter how he tried to avoid her wrath, she was too skilled and patient, nailed him every time. To this day he speaks fondly of Sophie and her antics. Thank God!
